In Memory of Thomas Anthony Casoria

September 11th, 2009

September 11, 2001 will always be remembered as a day in which we lost 2,996 of our citizens to the most heinous terrorist attack in the history of America.  Tragic though it may be, that day will also be remembered as one that gave us a greater awareness and appreciation of the everyday heroes among us – namely the firefighters, policemen and rescue workers who daily rush toward danger while others are running away.

Thomas Anthony Casoria is one of the brave men who responded to the call on September 11, 2001 and sacrificed his life in the hope that others may live.  He was a member of Engine 22 on East 85th Street, 29 years old, and set to be married about one month after that fateful day.

Tommy grew up in Whitestone, Queens. At Holy Cross High School in Flushing, Queens, he played second base and was captain of his baseball team and was an all-city football player. Once in the Fire Department, he switched to softball and played second base on the department team. He “made plays they can’t believe he made,” his father said.

Firefighter Casoria died in the North Tower of the World Trade Center doing a job that he loved.

People gravitated towards Tommy. He had a heart of gold and endless patience. He was everyone’s “go to guy.” Tommy also had an awesome sense of humor, he could impersonate just about everyone. Tommy absolutely loved being a firefighter. He loved helping people and being one of the guys.

There were two final radio calls from Tommy before the North Tower fell.  The first was to report he was helping other firefighters carry down a paraplegic.  The final radio call was to report that he was going back up to help a brother firefighter.  Determined, faithful, and heroic to the end.

Thomas will be remembered for his courage, dedication, sense of humor, friendship, devotion and willingness to answer the call of duty.  His sacrifice will not be forgotten and will always be appreciated.
