Some have said this photo shows Obama to be callous in not helping his friend down the steps. I don’t necessarily make that assumption, although I won’t quibble with those who do. The telling thing, to me, is the compassion and helpfulness shown by Officer Crowley. Helping at all is a remarkable thing in this day and age, but helping after the way he was treated by Gates is even more noteworthy. The police often get a bad rap and rarely are given credit for the difficult and stress-filled job they do, so it’s easy to see how they could become jaded. But this photo shows that there are still those police officers who help older people across the street, take time out to teach children about the law, and are some of our finest citizens. Crowley, throughout this entire event, has been a shining example of humanity and he is to be commended for that.
